Stone Town – Nungwi Hideaway

Tour Overview

There are few such evocative names as Zanzibar, the island that is part of Tanzania & lies about 20 miles off the coast near Dar es Salaam. For the first night you will be based in Dar es Salaam then, on the next day move to the old Stone Town, and have an opportunity to wander through fascinating narrow streets & the bustling bazaar. Get to know about Lloyd Mathew's prison Architecture (1893), with the idea to send violent criminals from the Tanganyika mainland to the Prison Island, ending up being used as a quarantine center for yellow fever epidemics that once raged through the region. Prison Island remained in the ownership of the government which converted the newer quarantine buildings into a guest house.
